The Times That Try REPUBLICAN'S Souls
5/17/2026
Living in Louisiana when Bill Cassidy stayed at home to secure victory over Mary Landriue, it is stunning to see the right switch from anti debate to anti democracy in 20 years. You hardly heard from the LSU doctor at the time. It was decided early on that the way to beat Mary was to have Bill Cassidy say nothing. But he wound up having plenty to say about January 6th, making even Mary Landriue proud.
But Bill Cassidy was and is a republican doctor, he's not some psycho maga sycophant. He has had two very reasonable takes that have put him at odds with right wing primary voters in Louisiana. First, he very reasonably decided that Trump should be impeached over January 6th. And secondly, he very reasonably decided that RFK Jr was no RFK. Instead of being respected for his honesty, literally no one voted for him in Louisiana. The state that has parishes instead of counties, with great music inside each one, chose to be commanded by a man convicted of sexual assault, felony business dealings and hush money payments. This type of anti American fascism will backfire in Louisiana the way it is backfiring in turning-back-to-blue Texas every day. The South isn't the South because it goes along with stuff. The voters will take back the South from the fascists.
For anyone paying attention, the Trump effect seems to be an erasure of America's democratic values in exchange for blind trust in the billionaires. Congress has been turned off by a Louisiana Congressman. Why is Louisiana so important you may ask ? Well, in Louisiana, the petrochemical industry knows no bounds. The headquarters of all the big boys only left Louisiana when they had literally destroyed everything. The waters had come to the door. They evacuated to Houston only a few years before most of New Orleans wound up there after Katrina.
In Louisiana, the mountains are made of gypsum, from making fertilizer. Baton Rouge to New Orleans is known as Cancer Alley. Industry tore up and poisoned the land so bad, it left only denial in its wake. What was once a Republican Party that stood by businessmen, is now just maga, and it stands by mega national corporations that have no soul, no regrets and no restraints. It is so far from democracy to succumb to corrupt polluters that kill everyone and everything. Right wing voters in Louisiana, who listen to Trump and not their hearts, should be ashamed to have shown one of the most honorable members of the state's delegation the door, just as the Governor hit the eject button on the state's black delegation.
The uniparty that the right wing is creating serves very few. The tax breaks given a new data center in Louisiana, by the republican supermajority, is worth more than the state spends on law enforcement in almost a decade of time. The modern power plants being built to power the data center could power the state's major cities. While republicans used to be on the side of commerce, today's maga right wing only seeks power through a total economic and cultural hegemony. They're as fascist as fascist could be.
Today's maga is quite upfront in saying they believe the main threat is from within. This is straight from the John Birch Society and the Heritage Foundation. Once the wall came down, the right wing in America centered its attention on liberals, activists and artists in order to assert control and ensure that all vestiges of what they considered communism were squashed. But maga has no historical perspective. They are told what to do by people who look like they do and promise them money. The country is controlled by people who are experts in controlling people. That's about it. And people such as Todd Blanche keep stepping out of the shadows to do the bidding of a coup. They are pretty much out of Todd Blanche's and the always flexing Petey Hegseth, but Louisiana's primary is showing they aren't out of voters, yet.
The case of Bill Cassidy will endure and help to bring down maga and put Trump in prison. The fact is that these Louisiana primary voters, after all these years, simply viewed Bill Cassidy as Mary Landruie, because he saw January 6th for what it was, a violent uprising where maga attacked law enforcement. His perspective about that day made him a Democrat overnight, stunning. As someone who campaigned heavily against Cassidy, when he would not come out in public, I know he's not a Democrat. But I also know that he has a conscience, and he knows right from wrong. These primaries where Trump is calling the shots and reputable, career Republicans, are being shown the door, spells doom for a party reeling from Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Southern states that have only recently been released from having their elections and police departments overseen by courts, have suddenly been unbound by worry for justice. ICE has shown them they can just jail all the Democrats. The military doesn't have to allow elections if everyone doesn't feel completely safe first. Trump and the Supreme Court have absolved them of all racism past, present and future. Or so they think. Cities across the South will sing a different tune come the midterms. From Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Columbia, Memphis, Birmingham, Jackson, to New Orleans, Houston, Pensacola, Mobile, Montgomery, McComb and Atlanta, the voters are going to prove that the South does have a soul. Trumpism will be rejected North, and South.
